One of my colleagues came to see me to talk. She asked if I had a few minutes to spare, that she really needed to speak to me, and she would really appreciate if I could make some time. I made time as I could see that she was upset. She asked if I knew this students, named a young man I am familiar with as he is consistently getting in trouble. She continued with her story and said she needed to report the incident she had experienced and asked to borrow a pen, she began sharing as she began writing her story. She told me she stays in her room after-school correcting student work for she rather correct work in the class than have to take it home. That on occasion some student would stop by her room and say hello or come in to chat with her. On this particular day this young man came in and asked her what she would get him for his birthday. She asked him when was his birthday and he replied tomorrow. He asked her again what she would get him for his birthday, and then grabbed his crutch and told her she should be his "*&*&^%$". She was flabbergasted, I was shocked. That was not the end of the story, she said he told her she would like them.
She continued writing and said that she had never been disrespected like that ever. That they young man walked out and ran down the hallway. She tried calling the office but no one was answering. She came down and found me. She was really upset and continued writing. She said she hoped the student did not return to her class. She said that she had never experienced something like that and that coming from a young man, one of her students, she could not understand.
How can this be acceptable? Our campus does not suspend students and there are only a couple of weeks left of school. What is going to happen to the student? What should be done? Will he be allowed to return to her class? Should he?
ReplyDeleteWow… that is terrible to happen to any teacher. I honestly don’t know what I would say or do in this situation. This child has a lot of nerve…. Why would he do such a thing? I feel terrible for this teacher. I feel that he should not be allowed to class because it is obvious that the teacher is very uncomfortable with the situation. I believe that the parents need to be called and maybe have a parent sit with him in class to monitor his behavior.
Can you imagine. It is embarrassing, imagine the parents having to experience this, the teacher was very upset.
ReplyDeleteThank you for understanding.
This is really scary. My hair stood right up. Well what does school policy say about gross student misconduct? Or possibly regular legal mechanisms if all else including speaking with the boys parents fail? Otherwise this is now a hostile work environment for the lady. It would be a pity if this behavior was somehow modeled by an adult and the boy is now manifesting it. This is how people end up on the wrong side.
ReplyDeleteThe parents were contacted. In all the years I have been working as a teacher I have not heard of anything like this, but then again of heard some worst stories, which I am holding to share in my book. ;)
DeleteI am shocked. Were the students' parents called? Did the teacher get to report the problem to the principal? I would be concerned and scared, besides being very upset. I have never heard of anything like this.
ReplyDeleteI feel so sorry for that teacher who experienced that kind of harassment. It is interesting to see how if a teacher engages in any kind of inappropriate behavior with a student, the teacher is severely punished, and that is right; teachers should always be role models for students. But the problem is on the other hand, when students are abusive or egregiously disrespectful to teachers, those kind of students, if anything, they usually face consequences that do not achieve a good level of correction on their behavior. It is unfortunate that in many schools this kind of unjust balance is still taking place.
ReplyDeleteI hope that this unfortunate event is already in the hands of the administrators; and that they investigate the accurate details to the fullest. I also hope, that if the student truly engaged in this kind of behavior, he himself will be held accountable, and he himself faces truly corrective consequences that result from this behavior.
Oh my god, this is horrible. I've never thought of having a student doing something like that to me. What would I do? In my classroom, there is a button underneath the podium to call the sheriff. I guess that's what I would do in my case, and then having the student kicked out of campus and suspended for a few semesters. But my context is college, and it's different than in a high school context. I hope the parents were called, and even if we are within a few weeks of ending the school year, I hope he is suspended from that class.
ReplyDeleteThank you for all concerned. The parents were called, and the student can not come to the teacher's class, this is what the teacher told me. I will keep you abreast of things as I find out.
